Young radio presenter, Cameron Boyes

Young radio presenter, Cameron Boyes

Following in the shoes of fellow presenter ‘Crazy Daisy’, eight year old Cameron Boyes has been awarded a regular slot on Drystone Radio, a community radio station in Yorkshire.
Cameron, who is from Hellifield in North Yorkshire, started his radio presenting with a five minute slot on another presenters show and clearly had an aptitude for broadcasting. Mick Peacock said “Cameron has a natural enthusiasm and desire which comes across on the radio, he clearly enjoys presenting, has a good knowledge of music and most importantly is very confident, it was an easy decision for the station to award him the regular slot each Tuesday at 4pm”.

Fostering young talent is quite a trademark of Drystone radio, and in 2010 DJ ‘Crazy Daisy’ Watkiss won the hearts of the nation when she was first recognised as the UK’s youngest DJ at the age of 9 presenting her weekly Saturday show.

Explaining more about their ethos of developing young talent Drystone Radio director Dave Adams said “We are proud to have a number of young people emulating Daisy. Cameron has been able to gain a wide variety of skills, including broadcasting and digital music skills. The Drystone team work with our younger presenters to develop playlists and programme schedules, create links, update listeners on local events and then allow them to broadcast on air. We believe our approach has a real positive effect on the education and self-confidence of our younger presenters – but most importantly our listeners love their shows!”

The future looks bright for Cameron, who also plays guitar and sings.  He says ‘I love being on the radio, it’s really good fun and I would like to do this as a job when I grow up’. He plans to develop his one hour show around schools in the local community,  with the hope that they can become involved in helping to create his one hour show; including selecting music to be played, recognising pupils within the school and giving pupils the opportunity to have songs dedicated to them and receive the all-important ‘name check’.
