Hi-Res LogoJuly’s Tip of the Month

Lots of dogs like to r1236976_440318972780032_1947539983_noll, if you’re lucky just rolling in some grass will be enough for your dog; if you’re not then things as horrid as dead carcasses and faeces will be their substance of choice! Why do they do it? Well there are different theories out there, one is that it is an old i
nstinct where they try to smell like the environment to make it easier to hunt. Another is that they do it to get rid of the perfumed smells we can put on our dogs when bathing them. Remember what smells nice to us, does not necessarily smell nice to them. Consequently always use a naturalshampoo, which is not too heavily perfumed so they don’t feel the need to “re-dog” their smell.
If it does happen though a bath is usually the only answer, however some people swear by using tomato ketchup to get rid of the smell as the vinegar neutralises the scent. Rub the ketchup on first and then wash off. It can look a little bit like a bloodbath, and on white dogs you run the risk of them being more pink than white for while (in which case cider vinegar can be used as replacement); however it’s got to be better than a stinking dog!
