Yorkshire based builders merchants Merritt & Fryers has taken the national Property & Construction title at the 2021 Family Business of the Year awards organised by Family Business United (‘FBU’).
Paul Andrews, founder of FBU and organisers of the awards explains, “Family businesses are the engine room of the UK economy and these awards celebrate their contribution. Community is at the heart of many family businesses across the UK and this award champions a family firm that really stands out in the property and construction sector as celebrating those values. Merritt & Fryers fought off some tough competition to win the title this year.
The business is clearly a vital cog in the community and the judges noted that Merritt & Fryers has evolved to become a household name with a reputation as the definitive builders merchant in the area. Founded in 1935, three third generation family descendants of the founders head the business today. Their investment in people, strong family values and long-standing commitment to the community demonstrate their service-led approach to working.
“They have been serving both the professional trades and the public for over 80 years and grown significantly over that time, expanding recently into Lancashire with the acquisition of a builders merchants firm in Barnoldswick. Family members in the firm are hands-on and customer facing and customers are fully aware that they are dealing with a genuine family business and appreciate the difference that makes. They are great ambassadors for the property and construction sector and deserve all the accolades that come with winning this award “, the judges concluded.
Rachel Fryers, Director of Merritt & Fryers, was delighted with the accolade, saying “It’s great to achieve national recognition for the work we have been doing to support tradesman and DIY enthusiasts around Craven, Skipton and the Dales for 85 years. The award is a credit to both our families and the hard-working teams in all our departments who make the business what it is.”
