To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the 1st World War, Grassington Players will stage the acclaimed play Oh What a Lovely War this October and are calling for the local community to get involved by supplying memorabilia for an exhibition to run alongside the production.
The play, which includes war songs and other music of the period, is a mixture of biting satire coupled with the desperate reality of the horrors of this most pitiful of wars. It is a tribute to the courage and tenacity shown by ordinary men and women whether fighting on the front line or striving to keep body and soul together at home.
Director Paula Vickers is appealing for help in showing how Grassington and the surrounding villages were affected by the war. In staging the exhibition, the Players plan to showcase the stories of local people who experienced these events first hand. Chairman Mary Wilkinson said “The exhibition at Grassington Town Hall will be a real focal point for everyone to get actively involved in the centenary commemoration.” She also hopes to involve the local schools in researching and celebrating the role of local people during the Great War to commemorate what life was like for the dales community during this difficult time.
Anyone with information or items to contribute to this exhibition are asked to contact Joan Whitaker on 01756 752964 as soon as possible. The exhibition and performances of the show will be on October 15th, 16th, 17th & 18th.
