When training your dog get him used to reacting to different command delivery methods. Whilst it is good if your dog recalls to your voice, this won’t work if you lose your voice or other noises drown you out. A whistle not only carries sound better but it is also clearer for the dog to hear and never shows frustration or a grumpy mood! Start off by using your whistle command (e.g. two toots), followed by the known verbal command. With praise and reward your dog will soon associate that the two things mean the same. At that point you can also introduce hand signals which can be invaluable if your dog is far away, especially if you need an immediate reaction such as stopping and not crossing a road. As with all training, reward and positive recognition will achieve the best results so make sure you have treats available in your treat bag and have plenty of fun and fusses.
